Flock Birdcare Wellington Is Now a Registered Charity

We have some incredibly exciting news to share. As of 25 June 2026, Flock Birdcare Wellington Charitable Trust is officially registered on the New Zealand Charities Register under registration number CC64878.

This is a milestone we have been working toward since Flock began, and we are so grateful to everyone who has supported us along the way. It would not have happened without the finders who trusted us with their birds, the volunteers who gave their time, the donors who believed in what we are doing, and our incredible vet partner Dr Sam Hurley at Avian Empire.

What does registered charity status mean?

Registered charity status is not just a badge. It means Flock Birdcare Wellington has met the formal requirements set by Charities Services to operate as a charitable organisation in New Zealand. It brings greater transparency and accountability, formal recognition of our purpose, and new opportunities to apply for grants and funding that were previously out of reach.

Most importantly, it means we are in a stronger position to keep doing the work that matters most: rehabilitating Wellington's injured and sick native birds and returning them to the wild.

What we have built

Flock Birdcare Wellington is Wellington's only independent DOC-permitted native bird rehabilitation facility. We operate under Wildlife Act Authority No. 120038-FAU and are authorised to rehabilitate tūī, kōtare, tauhou, pīwakawaka, paradise shelduck, grey warbler, and to hold and transfer kererū. We are volunteer-run, welfare-first, and every single bird that comes through our doors receives species-appropriate care regardless of a finder's ability to pay.

Where we are heading

Registered charity status opens the door to funding we need to grow. Our three biggest infrastructure priorities are a dedicated kererū aviary (which would allow us to upgrade from a holding permit to full kererū rehabilitation), a suitable seabird enclosure, and a smaller native bird aviary. These are not luxuries. They are the facilities that will let us say yes to more birds and give them the best possible chance of release.

How you can support us

The single most impactful thing you can do right now is donate. Every dollar goes directly toward the care of Wellington's native birds. With registered charity status now in place, we are also working toward being able to offer tax-deductible receipts for donations in the future.

You can also help by spreading the word. Share our page, tell your neighbours, and let people know that if they find an injured bird in Wellington, there is somewhere they can turn.
