Flock Birdcare Reaches a Major Milestone: Our DOC Permit

We are so proud to share that Flock Birdcare Wellington has been granted our Wildlife Act Authority (DOC permit No. 120038-FAU). This is a huge milestone for us and for native bird rescue in Wellington.

What the Permit Means

Our permit authorises us to catch, temporarily hold (up to 3 months), transfer and liberate the following native species:

• Kereru (NZ wood pigeon)

• Tui

• Kotare (sacred kingfisher)

• Tauhou (silvereye)

• Piwakawaka (fantail)

This makes us Wellington's only independent DOC-permitted bird rescue. It is the result of years of work, building the right facilities, partnerships and expertise to meet DOC's standards.

What Comes Next

Our permit covers temporary holding and transfer - not full long-term rehabilitation for all species. Our next goal is to build the infrastructure to expand what we can do. That starts with a 3x2m kereru aviary, which will allow us to move beyond our current holding permit and provide full rehabilitation for kereru. We are actively fundraising for this and for a seabird enclosure and small bird aviary.
