Found a Duckling or Seabird? Please Read This First

Kia ora everyone. With avian influenza precautions still in place, we want to be really clear about what we can and cannot accept right now, so that no bird and no rescuer ends up making a trip for nothing.

What we cannot accept at the moment

• Clutches of mallard ducklings

• Seabirds with non traumatic injuries

These groups carry a higher risk of avian influenza, and admitting them would put every patient currently in our care at risk. This is not a decision we made lightly, and we will reopen these admissions as soon as it is safe to do so.

If a bird is suffering

If a bird is beyond help and in need of euthanasia, we can assist with that. No animal should suffer, and providing a humane end is part of the care we offer. Please get in touch and we will help.

Bird identification can be tricky, especially with young birds. Before you travel to us, please send a photo to 021 195 5509 or flockwellington@gmail.com. We can quickly tell you what species you have, whether we can take it, and what to do next. It takes a minute and can save you a trip across town.

And remember, if you do bring a bird to us, please ring the doorbell at the entrance of our property and wait there. One of our team will come down in PPE and assess the bird with you outside the facility.
