Avian Influenza Update: How to Bring a Bird to Us Now

Kia ora everyone. As avian influenza continues to put pressure on bird rehabilitation across the region, we have made some changes to how intake works at Flock Birdcare Wellington. These changes protect every patient currently in our care, and we need your help to make them work.

The new intake process

1. Ring the doorbell at the entrance of our property and wait there

2. One of our staff will come down to you wearing the appropriate PPE

3. We will assess the bird outside the facility

4. Based on the assessment, the bird will go into the hospital, straight to quarantine, or, if it is suffering beyond help, we can provide humane euthanasia

Please do not come up to the hospital

We know it might feel strange to ring a bell and wait at the gate, but this one really matters. Coming up to the hospital puts our staff in a difficult position and risks the biosecurity of the entire property. Every bird inside is depending on that boundary holding. Ringing the bell at the bottom and letting us come to you keeps them all safe.

A reminder on what we can accept

We are still not accepting clutches of mallard ducklings or seabirds with non traumatic injuries at this time. If a bird is suffering and in need of euthanasia, we can assist with that. If you are unsure what species you have found, sending us a photo before you travel can save you a trip.
